James MacLaren, 1869. Large municipal cemetery containing many fine 19th century gravestones.
WALLS AND GATEPIERS: Strathmore and Edzell Streets: rubble walls at N, E and W, stepped at intervals, with saddleback coping, low wall at S with iron railings. 2 buttressed octagonal-section ashlar gatepiers at Strathmore Street with mannered finialled pyramedal caps, cast- and wrought-iron gates; 2 chamfered square-section gatepiers at Edzell Street with gablet caps, cast- and wrought-iron gates.
Barnhill cemetery was opened following the closure of the Old Burial Ground at Chapel Lane, off Fisher Street (listed deparately), occasioned in part by a cholera epidemic in 1866. Barnhill cemetery lodge is listed separately.
