Description

Probably Robert Burn of Edinburgh. Street lay-out by Burn
1806, terrace of 7 houses mostly built 1820-30 (nos 25,
27 built by 1819). 2 storeys with attics and
cast-iron-railed basements. All droved ashlar, painted
(except no 37), with pilastered doorpieces, round-arched
doorways, panelled doors with fanlights; sash windows,
some with 12-pane glazing pattern. Band courses between
floors; string at ground floor cill level; cornice;
blocking course; each house has single dormer (these
mostly canted); straight skews; end stacks; slate roof.
Some good interior work survives.

Statement of Interest

Despite differences in date between lay-out and construction of

these buildings, the similarity of the elevations to Burn's

Forth Street, Edinburgh, suggests that the executed street

elevation designs were his (Burn died in 1815). No 27 said to

have been residence of Dr Scott who performed first operation

in Europe under general anaesthetic. Nos 25 and 27 shown on

Wood's Map (1819). A group with items 45-49 and George Street

listings.
