Description

18th century; variously dismantled and re-erected. Red sandstone, some replacement stones; modern cream sandstone block plinth and red sandstone surround. Cross is single Roman Doric column standing on panelled pedestal; triglyph frieze supports overhanging cornice stone with guttae. Whole surmounted by cubic sundial and acorn finial.

Statement of Interest

The cross was (re- ?)erected in 1792, and appears to have been dismantled in 1816 to make way for Gillespie Graham's Town House. It was eventually re-erected in the Public Park, only returning to the Market Square in 1993, the Town House having been demolished in 1966. The cross was given by the Hays of Duns Castle, and may date from before 1792. The pedestal and sundial bear some relation to that at

Dunglass, Oldhamstocks, East Lothian, but on a vastly reduced scale.
