Description

Peddie and Kinnear, 1857. Imposing symmetrical 3-storey 5-bay Italianate bank with former manager's house above. Polished cream ashlar sandstone; rubble to secondary elevations. Principal (S and W) elevations of 3 corniced storeys, cornice of one floor being cill course of next. Base course and cill course at ground with scrolled foliate frieze; guilloche frieze at 1st floor; panelled frieze at 2nd floor; overhanging bracketed timber eaves. Long and short rusticated quoins. Moulded architraves; ground floor windows basket-arched with lugged architraves and rope-moulded arrises; 1st floor windows round-headed with architrave united to cornice by foliate decoration; 2nd floor attic windows shouldered.

S (MARKET SQUARE) ELEVATION: windows to all bays of all floors. Panelled door at centre with large rectangular fanlight; architrave as windows; doorpiece with disked pilaster panels and consoled cornice bearing 10 small acroteria. PK carved on top left quoin. To right, abutting return quoins, doorway providing acces to upper floors; 2-leaf panelled door with rectangular fanlight; moulded, lugged architrave and roll-moulded arrises; cornice.

W (MARKET SQUARE) ELEVATION: broad single bay with window at centre of each floor; further window to left at ground. Date 1857 carved on top right quoin.

E ELEVATION: blank rubble with projecting stair at ground; round-headed staircase window above. Quoins to left and eaves as above.

REAR ELEVATION: plain irregular 5-bay elevation; bracketed eaves wrap around at corners. D & W DUNS, BUILDERS carved under eaves to right.

4-pane timber sash and case windows (multi-pane to rear). Piend and platform roof; grey slates; corniced ashlar wallhead stacks; cast-iron drainpipes to rear only.

INTERIOR: modernised at ground. Upper floors unseen 1994.
