Statement of Interest

These cottages were built for weavers, as can be seen from their composition. The pair of windows to the left of each elevation would allow maximum light to penetrate into the room aiding the handloom weavers in their work. Weaving was a large industry in East Kilbride and in the 18th century General Stuart of Torrance built 2 cotton mills, which encouraged economic growth and population migration.
