Description

Calvert, 1904 with later alterations. Mirrored pair of semidetached 2-bay houses now subdivided, with French-Baronial detailing. Stugged ashlar with polished ashlar dressings; side elevations blank rubble. Base course, band course at canted windows, with moulded cill course, decorative apron, raised quoins.

NW (JOHN STREET) ELEVATION: panelled doorpieces with stylised curvilinear pediments above in bays to centre; panelled doors with plate glass fanlights above each. Shouldered windows at 1st floor. Full-height canted windows to outer bays; stop-chamfered arrises; corbelled to square at eaves, with stylised curvilinear gables, as above doors, with central stone tablet.

SE (REAR) ELEVATION: flat roofed extension, rendered and painted; lean-to single storey addition.

Plate glass, 4-pane (to rear) timber sash and case windows; rooflight to rear of each house. Purple slate roof with coped skews and terracotta toothed ridge tiles; slate lean-to to single storey addition. Apex stacks and wallhead coped stack to centre, rear.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1994.

BOUNDARY WALLS: stugged ashlar with coping; now with modern railings.

Statement of Interest

No 11 is called Benoni. Permission was sought from the Dean of Guild in January 1972 by No 11 to subdivide the house, and by No 13 in January 1974. The listing includes No 11A John Street.
