Description

Earlier 19th century with later alterations. Single storey over raised basement, 5-bay terraced pair of classical houses; rectangular-plan with additions to centre bay to rear. Droved ashlar with polished dressings (now painted); rendered at ground, NW elevation with rubble above and to rear, harled addition to NE rear, 1st floor; rendered at ground, bull-faced render to 1st floor of SE elevation. Band course between storeys, cornice and blocking course.

NE (JOPPA ROAD) ELEVATION: outer bays slightly advanced. Window in each bay and to each storey, blinded to centre. (Entrances to side elevations.)

SW (REAR) ELEVATION: additions to centre extended further to No 9.

Plate glass timber sash and case windows to No 9, except uPVC window at basement to outer right. 12-pane timber sash and case windows to No 11, 2-pane uPVC windows to outer left. Grey slate piended roof with rendered and coped mutual stack to centre.

INTERIOR: not seen to No 9, 1994. No original chimneypieces in situ to No 11, except to principal room (white marble); original plasterwork and panelled dado to principal room at upper storey.

Statement of Interest

The present owner of No 11 believes that the house was built in 1833. The houses are shown on Sutter's map to have stairs to the outer bays of the principal elevation. 2nd edition OS map, does not show any fore-stairs to the properties. No documentation has been found in reference to the removal of these stairs.
