Maj.Gen Wm. Roy's map of c 1750 shows roadway North from Nether Curry terminate at this position. The original roadway to the South access Gates was ploughed over by 1773 as shown on Armstrong map of that date. Other access routes were later added at firstly the the West Lodge followed by the North and East Lodges. The East Lodge Access is now the preferred route ( the Avenue ) for Heriot Watt University Campus.
