Description

John Baxter of Portobello, circa 1826. Single storey with basement, 3-bay classical house. Polished ashlar to ground; droved ashlar to basement; rubble to side elevations (now heavily pointed, 1994). Band course between basement and ground; moulded string course at lintel height; cornice and blocking course; segmental-arched recesses to openings.

SW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 5 ashlar steps (concrete repairs) with original cast-iron handrail to panelled door to centre; rectangular radial fanlight above; window to flanking bays; opening at bay to left, basement. Wall to left, slightly set back, boarded door to centre.

NE (REAR) ELEVATION: not seen, 1994. Maps indicate an extension to SE, not seen on Sutter's map, 1856, but upon 1st edition OS map, 1896.

12-pane timber sash and case windows. Piend and platformed slate roof; piended slate roof to extension to rear. Brick, square rendered with coping wallhead stack; rendered wallhead stack to front of SE elevation; brick and coped stack to NE corner.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1994.

BOUNDARY WALLS: droved ashlar with coping, formerly with railings.
