Description

Early 18th century. Single span bridge with later roadway and pedestrian walkway. Coursed random rubble with sandstone ashlar parapet. Parapet splayed to either end.

Statement of Interest

A-well proportioned single span bridge on the site of a historic river crossing on the Water of Leith. The bridge was an important crossing point on what was once one of the main routes into and out of the City of Edinburgh. The bridge is also at the centre of the historic Dean Village, with nearby Old Tolbooth (see separate listing) dating from 1675, and makes an important contribution to the historic setting at the centre of the village.

List description revised as part of resurvey (2009).
