Built 1801 by Richard Crichton, adapted from plan by John Fraser, 1795. Single storey, 3-bay plain classical cottage with piended roof and later single storey extension to NW. Coursed rubble with droved ashlar dressings. Base course, eaves course. Tabbed window margins; long and short quoins. Rear elevation is built into NE wall of walled garden.
NE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: modern door, deeply recessed in slightly advanced plain architrave with cornice and blocking course. Windows flanking to each side.
Predominantly 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Small 4-pane timber window to garden. Graded grey slates with lead flashings. Tall coped ashlar stacks with yellow clay cans.
B-Group with Dovecot, Ha-Ha, Gibson House (formerly Colinton House), Stables, Walled Garden, Garden Store, Main School Building, Chalmers and Rogerson Houses, Headmaster's House, South Lodge, Gatepiers and Boundary wall. The house adjoins the former walled garden of Colinton House. It is stylistically similar to the adjacent stables and of a comparable date. The rear wall of the house is partially built into the structure of the walled garden, allowing the occupant to supervise the garden. The cottage was originally planned to have its entrance to the NW, behind the present extension. This was to lead to a passageway with stairs to the loft. The large parlour, with its bed closet (where the entrance door is), was to contain the window overlooking the garden. This plan was essentially carried out, although modified to resemble the classical architecture of the adjacent stables. The house is a good example of estate architecture.
