Gun embrasures of the Half Moon Battery

Uploader's Comments

The massive gun platform, called the Half Moon Battery, was built by the Regent Morton in 1574, one year after the Long Siege when the Castle, held for Queen Mary, surrendered to combined Scottish and English Protestant forces, thus ending the civil war that had effectively existed since her abdication. It guarded the Castle's main approach and dominated the Old Town of Edinburgh below. The wall of the battery follows the line of the outer defences of the medieval castle.
