The attached photo is of "Linthorpe" 78 Craighall Road, Leith - in its original condition. "Linthorpe" was the home of my great great grandfather Henry Gray (b. 24 July 1856 in Leith, d. 23 June 1922 in Amby, Queensland Australia). Henry lived in the home with his wife, Martha Elizabeth Anderson Gray and their six children.
The property was name after Linthorpe in Middlesborough, England - this being the location where Henry and Martha married in 1888. The name "Linthorpe" can be seen on the gatepiers and also in a mosaic located on the front porch upon entry to the home. One of Henry's occupations was a builder so I suspect in may have built the house as his family home. The initials "HG" which appear above the front door in the stone work is the intials of Henry Gray.
I note your website listed the building as circa 1878, however I think it may be more 1889/90 as census records incidate the family lived in the home during the 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses. Based on family records, I think they may have moved into the home in early 1891 prior to the census.
The attached photo shows the home in its original condition with iron widows walk and fence panels. Apparently just prior to or around the time of World War 1, all iron work in the city was removed and melted down to make guns and the alike.
Should you have any additional information on "Linthorpe" 78 Craighall Road, Leith other than what is published on your website, I would be grateful to receive a copy.
