Circa 1790; alterations and additions by Stephen & Maxwell, 1987. 3-storey basement and attic classical tenement on gusset site with modern public bar at ground and basement. Broadly droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings; largely rebuilt at ground. V-jointed rustication at ground; 1st floor cill course. Plate glass canopy wraps around S and E elevations enclosing open basement area, with 2 pedimented doorways.
E (HOPE STREET) ELEVATION: 4-bay gable and common stair bay slightly set back to right. 2 left bays with blind windows; right bays at 1st floor with decorative cast-iron balconies. Stair bay with bipartite piend-roofed dormer.
S ELEVATION: 7-bay. Pair of 3-bay bows with blind centre windows flank centre bay; round-headed windows at ground. Modern pedimented porch at centre adjoins glazed canopy to right. Pair of bowed slate-hung piend-roofed timber dormers flank central dormer.
W (QUEENSFERRY STREET) ELEVATION:
Timber sash and case 12-pane windows. Ashlar coped skews; grey slates; apex stacks removed.
INTERIOR: modern coved bar interior at ground interconnects with basement, top-lit by glazed area and incorporating vaults under pavement.
A Group with Nos 6-16 Hope Street as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh's New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
