Description

Robert Paterson, 1880; later top floor studio arcade John McLaren, 1896. 4-storey, 4-bay classical Renaissance tenement and shop premises. Sandstone ashlar, channelled ashlar at 1st floor. Pilastered timber shop front with round arched fanlight and doorway (to left), corniced fascia. Canted 4-light wide bay at 1st floor, narrow window to left with fielded panel above. Wide Doric fielded pilasters at 2nd floor, original consoled and corniced eaves course surmounted by arcaded 3rd floor, pilasters and keystones; corniced parapet, end dies with urn finials.

Extensive plate glass glazing to shop front, plate glass in timber sash and case at 1st and 2nd floors; round-headed transomed 18-pane glazing to 3rd with hoppers.

Statement of Interest

The narrow façade with bold classical detailing corresponds to the original 3 bay townhouse by James Tait which it replaced. This building retains its early 20th century arrangement of shop front. The later arcade may be linked to the development of Shandwick Place as an area where artists (notably the Scottish Colourists) established studios in early 20th century. The nearby Albert buildings were built shortly before this as a gallery by Hamilton Beattie; Samuel J Peploe also had a studio in Shandwick Place for some time.

Robert Paterson's also designed the Café Royal where he created an innovative roof system. Paterson designed a number of tenements, others of which were in the New Town and Marchmont, in Edinburgh.
