Description

Circa 1785; No 23 extended to rear by Peddie and Kinnear, 1864. 3-storey basement and attic, 7-bay former pair of classical houses with flats above. Cleaned droved ashlar Craigleith sandstone. Regular fenestration. At centre, steps to architraved and corniced doorpiece with 3-pane fanlight; formerly to common stair, now stair removed and glazed inner door serves as window to office; flanked by pilastered doorpieces with fluted frieze and dentilled cornice (that at right modern reinstatement); flush panelled doors with Edinburgh handles. Piend-roofed dormers; 3 at centre, flanked by large dissimilar tripartite ones.

Irregular 4-storey 4-bay coursed rubble rear elevation; some enlarged windows to E.

Timber sash and case windows; plate glass, except 12-pane to central bay and dormers. Grey slates; ashlar coped mutual skews; dressed stone mutual stacks, reduced to E (and lead covered with the skew).

INTERIOR: not seen 1995. Central curving cantilevered stairs; tenement stair removed at ground.

RAILINGS: cast-iron fleur-de-lys railings.

Statement of Interest

Double uppers now incorporated into No 23. A significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain; Queen Street was built to take advantage of the northern views, and has survived remarkably unaltered to this day.
