David Bryce, 1839. 4-storey 3-bay tenement with shops to ground floor, stepped to slope of street. Cream coursed ashlar (painted to ground); random rubble to rear. Consoled cornice to ground floor. Windows in raised surrounds; pedimented dormers breaking eaves. Panelled door (to close) to outer left; timber panelled door with plate glass fanlight in 2nd bay from left; 2-leaf timber panelled door to shop to right flanked by windows. Earlier 2-storey 6-bay rubble building at right angles to rear, with slated roof and corniced end stack.
12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Graded grey slates. Crowstepped skews. Corniced ridge stacks with circular cans.
Victoria Street formed part of Thomas Hamilton's plan for the new Southern and Western Approaches to the city - the W approach - King's Bridge and Johnston Terrace, and the S approach - George IV Bridge, and the link to the Grassmarket - Victoria Street. The very plain tenements at Nos 1-7 Victoria Street show only a hint of the 'Old Flemish' style specified by the Commissioners to the Improvement Act.
