David Hamilton, circa 1810. Tudor gatepiers to former Barnton House (demolished and replaced with housing, W & J R Watson, 1982). Pair of pointed-arched, 4-columned piers flank entry; curved corner wall to left; single octagonal pier to Barnton Avenue West. Polished yellow sandstone; droved sandstone wall.
W (WHITEHOUSE ROAD) ELEVATION: 2 piers comprising double engaged octagonal columns to left and right of architraved arch; architraved panelling set within each facet; projecting base courses; carved foliate decoration to friezes; upper crenellation between columns. Cast-iron gates missing.
WALL: round-arched arrow slits set at intervals along curved wall to street. Projecting base course; roll-moulded cornice.
N (BARNTON AVENUE WEST ) ELEVATION: single octagonal pier to left of wall; round-arched arrow slits to each facet; chamfered plinth; architraved capital with sculpted foliate panels in each facet; surmounting geometric crenellation.
Despite the demolition of Barnton House and the subsequent redevelopment, the gate piers remain significant - both in terms of scale, detail and quality of craftsmanship, remaining tangible evidence of the previous existence of Barnton House. The 1914 Ordnance Survey map shows a lodge within the gates (since demolished).
