Description

William Lambie Moffat, 1875-6. 2-storey rectangular plan,
Domestic Gothic house. Squared and snecked sandstone with
ashlar dressings. Chamfered reveals, mannered lintels;
stone mullions and transoms. Adjoined to boundary walls of
Portobello High School Annexe.
W ELEVATION: 3-bay. Hoodmoulded door at centre with plate
glass fanlight; small window above. Wide gabled bay to
outer left with tripartite at ground and bipartite at
1st floor and trefoil panel in gablehead; bipartites to
each floor at outer right, breaking eaves in gabled
dormerhead at 1st floor.
E ELEVATION: to playground. Door at centre; lean-to play
shelter adjoined, continuous with retaining walls. Bipartite
windows to outer bays at 1st floor, in wide, gabled bay
to right, breaking.
Former addition to ground to S elevation. Single storey
gabled projection to N elevation.
Plate glass and small-pane glazing patterns in sash and case
windows. Grey slates. Ashlar coped skews. End stacks.
RETAINING WALLS AND PIERS: stugged sandstone rubble
retaining walls, adjoined to those of school; gablet capped
piers at intervals to W. Cast-iron arrowhead gate.

Statement of Interest

Listed as a largely unaltered component of a typical

Victorian school Complex. Portobello High School Annexe

to S, listed separately.

Detached polychrome brick structure to north is not

included in the listing.
