Description

John Lessels 1880. 2 square freestanding polished ashlar pillars surmounted by carved heraldic beasts (lion at N pillar, unicorn at S pillar) supporting castle emblem of the City of Edinburgh. Base; pedestal with architraved panels, rope-moulded nook-shafts to angles, and miniature carved capitals; foliate frieze swept to cornice; plinth supporting heraldic statuary. Shield at N pillar reads: "The Right Hon Thomas J Boyd, Lord Provost 1880". Shield at S pillar reads "Presented to the City of Edinburgh by Messrs T Nelson and Sons".

Statement of Interest

These two pillars were presented to the City of Edinburgh by the printing and publishing firm of Thomas Nelson and Sons in appreciation of the temporary accommodation allocated to them on the Meadows after their Hope Park Crescent premises were destroyed by fire in 1876.
