John Smellie, architect; 1909. Truncated at W terrace of 3 x
2-storey and basement houses, 7 bays arranged 2-2-3. Unusual
reversal of masonry hierarchy with polished ground floor
banded at cill and lintel levels with rock-faced masonry. 1st
floor inner bays with rock-faced masonry.
Nos 5 and 7 symmetrical pair. 2-storey canted windows to
outer bays; deep plain parapets breaking through eaves steps
to round arched doorways rock-faced lintel with keystone,
glazed fanlight. Outer doors panelled, vestibule doors
tripartite with leaded glass panels and sidelights. Between
doors, arched roll-moulded recess with 2 small lights. At
1st, corbels support ashlar balcony with bombe section
cast-iron balustrade with festoons. Above doors single light
windows with raised margins. Sash windows plate glass lower
sashes small pane upper sashes. Eaves band, swept bracketted
eaves, plain skews. Corniced axial stacks.
No 9; 3-bay house of similar detail. Canted windows to outer
bays. Steps to central square-headed roll-moulded doorway
with lintel as above. All other details as Nos 5-7.
Flank to No 5; polished ashlar with rock-faced banding. Rear
elevations polished ashlar with extensive rear projecting
wings. No 5 with 2 canted oriels supported on brackets, to
1st floor. Otherwise windows single or bipartite with some
canted windows. Low rock-faced ashlar walls with polished
coping to gardens, that at No 5 supporting cast-iron
railings.
Part of Kirklee Road B group. Terrace never completed.
