Description

John Baird and James Thomson, 1858-60 in style of 1830. 3
storeys, 5 x 9 bays. Polished ashlar, channelled at ground
floor with voussoirs, droved ashlar side and return
elevation. Central fluted doorpiece with shaved capitals, at
head of steps oversailing basement to West George Street.
Consoled, segmentally pedimented doorpiece to arched,
architraved entry at No 175 Hope Street. Plinth, rising on
slope of hill. All windows sash and case in architraves.
Shallow arched ground floor windows on cill band, ground
floor cornice. 1st floor cill band; consoled, corniced
windows with inset moulded cills. 2nd floor cill band;
corbelled plain windows. Eaves entablature; modillion
cornice. Solid parapet with regular coupled piers.
