1866-7, John Burnet. 2-storey, 11-bay painted
channelled ashlar. 4 bays to S are a later addition.
Ground floor 4 windows in architrave and central carved
arched doorpiece with modern door. Later 3 windows and
door to S. Disced band course. 1st floor: 7 windows
front public hall/courtroom, with Corinthianesque
pilastrade. Later group of 4 windows with pilastrade to
S. Dentil cornice, slate roof with tall square ventilator
(original).
1-storey advanced flanking blocks with gateway door and
modern window to N, window at S. Channelled ashlar.
Rubble rear with 3 tall arched windows to stair.
Interior: Entrance Hall has 2 marble Corinthian columns
dentil cornice and cast-iron scrolled stair banister. Also
small cast-iron spiral stair. Rooms altered.
1898, 3 storey brick with red sandstone margins prison block to rear. Contains 40 cells on either side of central top-lit hall.
Restored after a fire which destroyed a considerable part of
the building in 1882. The courtroom is partitioned and has a
false ceiling.
