W F McGibbon 1894, 1896. 3- and 4-storey and attic brick
ornate Flemish style grain mill, in 3 sections.
1. Wallace Street, 1894 3-storey, 5-bay block. Ground floor
altered, except cornice. Tall basket-arched recesses rise
through 1st and 2nd floors with large transomed and mullioned
windows set in arch head on second floor. The narrower 5th
bay fronts a staircase. Curvilinear gable with 3 tall arched
windows over 2 end bays. Slate roof.
2. 1896 Corner block, 3-by-3 bays, small ground floor windows
blocked. Basket arched recesses similar to E block embracing
3 floors. Mullioned windows with V-oriel in outer bay of 1st
floor to each elevation. Tall corner tower has 2 twin arched
and hoodmoulded windows to each elevation, corbelled
machicolated parapet, battlement. Formerly held water
cistern.
3. 1896, 4-storey and attic 2-bay block, gable end to West
Street, detailed as above, with triple arched windows in
curvilinear gable and small crowning segmental pediment.
The 2 West Street blocks were linked by a recessed cart entry
with former engine house and grain silo at rear. Linking iron
gantries around a hoist. Later brick 3rd floor gantry and
modern metal sheeting below. A V-oriel faces inwards.
Interior: ground and 1st floor has original concrete floors
and steel supports. Upper floors iron columns, steam beams
and wooden floors.
Hamilton and Manson, grain millers, founded 1879. This
evidently inspired the similar building for Blacklock and
MacArthur, 1900 in the same block. Partial collapse of flemish gable on West Street during housing conversion, 11/12 November 2002. West Street portion re-numbered following conversion to housing.
