Description

Early 20th century hospital block with Scots renaissance ornament, long symmetrical N elevation to driveway, ranges to rear in symmetrical lay-out including long symmetrical south-facing 1920s/30s range (Jura and Melfort ' now demolished). Driveway front has 3-storey centre with central porch, pedimented dormer heads above main eaves level between crow-stepped outer gables; 2-storey shallow recessed wings each with canted balustraded semi-octagonal turrets with stepped stair windows. Ashlar, with contrasting dressings; windows mostly with mullions and/or transomes, multi-paned glazing; slate roofs; end and wall-head stacks. Outer ranges mostly single storey but are similarly detailed, with complex roof forms. Jura/Melfort had tall single storey over basement with attic in mansard; framed, multi-paned and symmetrical, wide centrepiece with pediment over tall central round-arched window, flanking bays fully glazed at ground between stanchions, full-length balconies, terminal bays.

Statement of Interest

Now in five separate blocks. Converted to residential use with selective demolition of parts of the original building 2003/2004. Jura/Melfort building demolished in early 1990's.
