Haddington Cross

Uploader's Comments

The mercat cross is surmounted by the figure of a goat. A goat and vine appear in the coat-of arms used by Royal Burgh of Haddington since 1296, now given a new form in the arms for Haddington and District Council. According to C J Burnett, Dingwall Puirsuivant, writing in 1986, the symbol may represent prosperity, as "there is no need for the goat to eat grass when a succulent vine is available".
