Description

James Nisbet, John Laidlaw, masons and John Purves,
carpenter 1771-1773, altered by William Elliot in 1823 and
belfry over north porch added in 1833. Octagonal on plan with
vestibule wings projecting from the north and south sides;
blocked doors at east and west sides arched and
pedimented, body of church is two storey with square
hood-moulded windows to gallery, coursed rubble with droved
dressings and cill-courses pyramidal slated roof with
octagonal lantern at the apex. North and south projecting
wings are pedimented with key-blocked round-headed,
hood-moulded windows over entrance foors. Italiante timber
belfry over north porch added 1833. Interior: Flat ceiling
substituted for original domed interior in 1823 to improve
acoustics, gallery altered to horse-shoe shape and new
pulpit etc installed by Usher Holme (Liverpool) 1895

Statement of Interest

James Brown of Edinburgh, was consulted by heritors about

the state of the previous church in 1770 (Colvin 144).

Designs for additions produced by James Gillespie Graham

in 1823 were not executed (NEW STATISTICAL ACCOUNT iii

339-6).
