Dated 1719 possibly by William Adam with mid 19th century
addition and alteration, 2 storey, basement and attic, 5
bay front to west. Sneck-harled rubble with ashlar dressings.
Basement treated as plinth, rusticated angle quoins at
ground and 1st floors. Central door, approached by railed
steps over area, has mid 19th century pedimented doorpiece
added to original lugged surround. Flanking windows replaced
by broad canted bays at ground and basement. 1st floor
windows square, eaves band and cornice at wallhead with
parapet over all added in mid 19th century as were the
tall rectangular stacks and pair gabled attic dormers. South
front: 18th century house has 2 bays deep, extended to 5
bays in matching style, new work in coursed squared rubble
with polished dressings. Piended, platformed, slated roof.
William Adam illustrated a design for Broomlands in
VITRUVIUS SCOTICUS without claiming it as his own. There are
differences between the design given and the house as
built ie omission of wings, height of 1st floor windows.
Dated 1719 on the 3rd quoin from the ground at the
right-hand corner of the west elevation.
