Description

Circa 1830 with 18th (?) century range to rear. 2-storey, 3-bay plain classical, symmetrical square-plan house with piended roof, paired stacks; single storey and attic, crowstepped gabled range projecting to rear, (E). Modern harl with cement dressings. Base course; eaves course. Plain margins to openings.

W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: short stone flight of steps to architraved and corniced doorway at ground in bay to centre; window at 1st floor above. Window at each floor in bays flanking.

N (SIDE) ELEVATION: 2-bay with screen wall extending to left. Window at each floor in each bay.

S (SIDE) ELEVATION: 2-bay main block with 2-by projection to right (E). Window at each floor in each bay in block to left. Window at ground with attic window, breaking eaves, above in each bay to right.

E (REAR) ELEVATION: timber-panelled door with window flanking in flat-roofed entrance porch at ground in bay to centre; window in right return; tall stair window above. 2 windows at ground to right of porch; small window set between at 1s floor. Attic window to crowstepped gable to projection from bay to left; wide doorway and window in right return.

Variety of glazing patterns including lying-pane and 2- and 4-pane timber sash and case windows. Traditional, graded stone slated roof; similar roof to projection; paired, harled, corniced stacks to main house similar ridge stack to projection. Predominantly uPVC rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: timber skirting boards, architraved and panelled doors; central stone staircase with plain timber balusters and timber handrail with spiral terminal; decorative cornices to main rooms; segmental-arched doorway with decorative fanlight at 1st floor hall connecting main house with earlier projection to rear.

Statement of Interest

A fine and intact earlier 19th century town house with distinctive piended roof and twin stacks. It retains many original interior features including an elegant doorway connecting the two parts to the house. It bears similarities in layout to Lilybank House on East Road, and to 8 Old Scapa Road, (both listed separately) and is a house type commonly used for manses in Orkney.
