Description

Quadrangular churchyard enclosing site of St Mary
Magdalene's church and many well-sculptured 17th-19th
century stone monuments, including that to Dr James Mounsey
of Rammerscales (d. 2.2.1773) physician to Empress of
Russia; tall Jardine family obelisk erected circa 1843.
Enclosed by ashlar-coped rubble-built walls with gate at E
with corniced square gatepiers, hearse house at SW angle.

Statement of Interest

Following the Battle of Dryfe Sands in 1593, the Maxwells

sought refuge within Lochmaben Church, which was fired by the Johnstones.

Site of parish church moved to present site 1819.
