F W Troup, London, 1906-7. Asymmetrical 3-storey and attic
gabled house. Rubble, tooled rubble and tooled ashlar
dressings, some slate hanging. Entrance in NE re-entrant
angle; canted ground flood window at N and substantial
projecting canted window with facetted slated roof at NW;
small facetted and slated 2nd floor oriel in W facing gable.
Painted weatherboarded sun room with some later alterations
and with 1st floor room above in SW re-entrant angle; modern
multi-pane glazing. Coped clustered ridge stack at N; tall
coped wallhead stack at S; slate roof with overhanging eaves.
Narrow service court at E flanked by garage range, with some weatherboarded walling.
INTERIOR: all original chimney pieces have been removed.
Simple cornices to all ceilings; shaped flat balusters to
staircase with attenuated finials; panelled doors some
original boarded cupboard doors with long hinges.
SUNDIAL: late 17th or early 18th century pedestal sundial
with square head re-sited from elsewhere in garden.
The architect F W Troup was born and brought up in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, where he designed 2 houses. Blucairn is the
only known house (in Moray) designed by this architect, who
practised in London. Original provenance of the sundial
unknown.
