Woodhouse and Morley, architects, dated 1887. Single storey
over basement, cruciform plan. Brick with ashlar dressings.
East elevation. 4 arched arcade supported by Ionic columns,
flanked by pilastered bays each with pilastered mullion and
transom windows with bracketted cills and aprons. Dentilled
eaves cornice and balustrade with urns on dies, and carved
relief panels above outer bays with pediments. Geometric
glazing to upper lights of windows. Side elevations (north &
south) similarly detailed but 2 centre bays advanced with
Venetian windows, centre lights raised through balustrade and pedimented. Projecting corniced stack to centre of north
elevation. Porch in re-entrant angles to west of advanced
bays have cast iron lamp standards that to north incomplete.
Balustrade continues round north porch. Rear pavilion
similarly detailed with pedimented Venetian windows to gables
and 6 transomed windows to long wall. Pedimented hall rises
in centre lit by side lunettes at side and round headed
windows at end. Carved date stone and panel with name of
school to front gable. Slate roofs, some piended, with brick
corniced stacks. Roof of central hall has 2 ventilators and
pilastered and domed lantern.
Interior has much variegated tile work mosaic floors and
various beamed roofs, largely hidden by later decoration.
