A building has probably stood on this site since the 12th century it being one of the oldest parts of the burgh. The present building dates from the late 17th century and was saved from demolition and restored in 1937 by local architect James Hoey Scott as his home. The building was purchased in 1962 by The St Andrews Presevation Trust and is still their HQ and museum.
