Description

Post Office, 1920s in appearance, designed probably by J Wilson Paterson, or W T Oldrieve, his predecessor in the Ministry of Works. Scots baronial. Brown rock-faced ashlar, contrasting yellow ashlar dressings with Scots renaissance mouldings. Small-paned sash windows; green slate roof. 2 storeys, low wing to right; front based on L-plan tower formula, but gabled left bay (containing vehicle pend) does not step forward in to street. Off-centre door with "Post Ossice" inscribed in frieze in art nouveau lettering. First floor windows break through eaves and have pedimented dormer heads, main roof swept deeply down areas between and linked by rhone pipe. Coped stacks; crow-stepped gables, roof over low wing partly concealed by high wall-head.
