Description

Late 18th to early 19th century with later alterations. 2-storey and attic, 2-bay rectangular-plan asymmetrical gable-ended house. Roughly coursed rubble with cconcrete window cills.

E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: deep-set boarded door at ground in bay to left; window at 1st floor. Window at each floor with small attic window above in bay to right. gablehead stack above.

N (SIDE) ELEVATION: part-glazed timber panelled door in bay to left; window at 1st floor above. Window at ground in bay to right. Shed dormer above.

4- and 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Caithness slates to roof; stone skews; cavetto moulded skewputts; corniced, harled gablehead stack; cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1997.

Statement of Interest

John Renton, an early adventurer was born here on 4th April, 1848. Described as 'a real Robinson Crusoe' he was kidnapped whilst exploring the west coat of the United States and was taken to the Solomon Islands, and then to Queensland, Australia. He returned to the Solomon Islands in 1878 but was murdered there before he could return to his native Orkney.
