Circa 1840, L-plan cottage with slightly later wing addition to NE. Low single storey, gabled cottage, former factor's house to Portkil House. Grey cement render with ashlar margins and dressings; chamfered reveals; panelled ashlar aprons to windows; advanced bracketted eaves.
NW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: broad 3-bay gable to outer right, lean-to boarded porch addition at centre; flanking windows. Gabled wing advanced to left, tripartite window, window on right return; blank bay to outer left.
SE (MAIN) ELEVATION: 3-bay symmetrical block with slightly recessed 2-bay wing addition to outer right. Advanced gabled centre bay breaking eaves, window with bracketted block canopy; flanking windows. Wing to right with 2 tripartite windows symmetrically disposed.
INTERIOR: modernised.
12-lying-pane sash and case windows; grey slate roof, lead flashings; tall sandstone ashlar ridge stacks, circular cans.
Portkil Cottage was the former factor's house to Portkil House which is situated to the W and has been substantially altered. The former coachhouse to the NE of Portkil Cottage is listed separately.
