Jean McAlpine's Inn, Aberfoyle. Halfway between Callander and Loch Lomond. All who have read "Rob Roy" - the most rousing of the Waverley Novels - will remember the visit of Frank Osbaldistone and Nicol Jarvie the Bailie to the rude inn at Aberfoyle. How the landlady, Jean MacAlpine, refused them admission though night had fallen - and how the three Highlanders within objected to the visitors' presence and set about them; arid how the stout bailie seized the red-hot coulter of a plough that had been used to poke the fire and defended himself with great effect. A coulter, said to be the same, still hangs from a tree by the modern hotel here. The good jean was quite unperturbed by the fight, but kept the door shut, so that, "kill or be killed," none should leave without paying the bill.
