Although Southfield was used as a hospital for much of the twentieth century, it has been replaced by a purpose-built care hospital in the grounds and returned to residential use. The landscaped grounds were developed as a residential housing estate in the mid 1990s (Glenellen estate officially but everyone calls it Carnbee).
