Probably circa 1730, William Adam. Pair of tall, rusticated cream sandstone ashlar gatepiers with freize and cornice at former N entrance to The Drum Estate. Later rubble walls adjoining, and lower infilling between piers, pedestrian pend formed in wall also blocked. No access remains.
More-Nisbett suggests that there were once lodges beside these gatepiers, and refers to the tradition that the piers date from the John Mylne House of 1584, although this is unlikely. This was the main entrance to the house from Edinburgh, and William Adam?s outlook tower which exploited the fine view over the Deerpark, the city of Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth, seems to have been located near this entrance, terminating the North avenue, suggesting that he was responsible for this gateway. Forms part of the Category A group of Drum Estate buildings comprising The Drum, East Lodges (in Newton Parish Midlothian), Gardeners' Cottages, Icehouses, Mercat Cross, Stables, Steading, Walled Garden, West Lodge and Drumbank, all listed separately.
