Description

18th century or earlier. Low, single storey, steeply pitched, gabled farm building, variegated random rubble with some later brick infill. Door to each outer bay of front (W) elevation, plain boarded, interspersed roughly symmetrically by 2 small windows. Small openings to both N and S gables, infilled slit openings to E elevation.

Fenestration fixed panes or boarded. Roof steeply pitched, main skews, red pantiles with some of glass. Single plain can vents to centre of E roofslope.

Statement of Interest

An unusually early survivor. The history and uses of this farm building may warrant further investigation, although evidence points to this having been originally 2 cottages. At least some of the openings are clearly later slappings. Steepness of the roof pitch may suggest an original thatch. The map of 1854 shows a larger quadrangular steading at Seggarsdean, subsequently demolished except this building. The associated house is post-1854.
