Description

Circa 1817. 2-storey, 3-bay rectangular-plan, symmetrical classical house subdivided to form 2 properties (No 234 in bay to outer right). Lightly stugged cream sandstone (cleaned at No 236); polished dressings; raised long and short quoins; raised margins to ground floor dividing band; continuous cornice; projecting painted cills. Later flat-roofed extension to outer left (No 238).

W (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: painted Roman Doric pilastered doorpiece

(No 236) at centre comprising plain frieze, projecting cornice; timber panelled door; round-arched fanlight. Tripartite window at ground in bay to outer left; single windows at 1st floor in bays at centre and outer left. Canted window at ground in bay to outer left converted from original tripartite (No 234); single window at 1st floor; piended bipartite dormer above.

Replacement 18-pane timber sash and case windows to No 236; 2-pane sash and case window to No 234 at 1st floor; 18-pane dormer above. Graded grey slate roof; raised stone skews. Corniced ashlar apex stack to N; ashlar ridge stack to S (mutual with No 232); various cans.

INTERIORS: not seen 1996.

Statement of Interest

1855 Ordnance Survey map refers to this and the adjacent No 232 (see separate list entry) as belonging to the Jessfield Estate. Subdivision and recent stone cleaning of No 236 has compromised the overall symmetry of the terrace.
