Description

Mid 19th century with later additions and alterations. Single storey with attic cottage with single storey wing to NW, adjoining terrace. Squared and snecked whinstone with droved dressings; harled side and rear elevations. Long and short quoins and margins.

NE ELEVATION: 2-leaf boarded door in gabled bay to centre with plate glass letterbox fanlight above, consoled and corniced doorpiece; round-arched window in gablehead above; quatrefoil-carved plaque above. Window to each flanking bay. Wing to right slightly set back with window.

SW ELEVATION: not seen fully, 1995. Lean-to single storey addition to left. 2 3-light half-piended dormers, breaking eaves to outer bays.

12-pane timber sash and case windows. Slate roof, half-piended to wing. Harled wallhead stack to SE elevation.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1995.

BOUNDARY WALLS: whinstone rubble wall with rubble coping with ashlar dressings to opening.

Statement of Interest

The building is shown and named in 1858. Nos 28 and 32 Hillside (see separate listing), were the earliest buildings to be erected in this part of Selkirk.
