Description

Mid 19th century with some later additions. Single storey and attic, 3-bay farmhouse with U-plan steading in classical composition. Whinstone and sandstone rubble with stugged sandstone margins and dressings. Overhanging bracketed eaves.

S (MAIN) ELEVATION: broad gable to outer left, window at ground, smaller window above; modern, lean-to, wooden boarded porch in re-entrant angle to right, slate roof, window at centre, door on right return. Bay to outer right, window at ground, gabled dormerhead. Flanking gable ends of U-plan steading recessed; . Gable to right with blind round-arched window at centre. Gable to left with blind round- arched window at ground, narrow ventilation slit above.

N (REAR) ELEVATI0N: piend-roofed jamb to outer left, window opening at centre, reduced for smaller window; door to right return. Broad window at centre, lean-to cement rendered bay to outer right.

8-lying-pane timber sash and case windows; 12-lying-pane timber sash and case window at centre rear; modern plate glass window. Graded grey slate roof, lead flashings; corniced apex ridge stacks, octagonal cans; tall corniced ridge stack at rear.

STEADING

E RANGE: gabled L-plan range. Rubble with stugged sandstone margins. Roof lowered. 2 openings at centre of E elevation; 3 openings symmetrically disposed on W elevation, 2 doors and window, lintel of upper window above centre door; 2-bay jamb to outer left.

W RANGE : long gabled range, various openings now with broad sliding garage door at centre; flanking doors; circular ventilation pipes below eaves.

Corrugated iron roof; boarded doors.

Statement of Interest

The farmhouse and steading are shown on the 1st edition map. The farmhouse is located on the B832 to Helensburgh. It is typical of the courtyard farms of the Luss estate.
