Description

Mid 19th century. 2-storey castellated circular summerhouse situated on ground rising steeply to NE behind main house. Harled brick; raised ashlar cills; saw-tooth brick course below eaves course; ashlar coped battlements.

Segmental-arched (lying-pane) window at each floor to principal (SE) face; boarded door at ground offset to left. Segmental-arched (lying pane) window at 1st floor to SW face. Replacement window at 1st floor to NE face. Timber architrave to rear; timber panelled door approached by stair. Roof not seen, 1996.

INTERIOR: brick lined. Boarded floors and ceiling with exposed rafters.

Statement of Interest

The house and tower seem to be contemporary, both in evidence on the 1st edition OS map. Although casements, the lying pane windows are in keeping with those used on the main house. There is no internal stair; access to the upper floor is from the doorway to the rear. It commands an impressive view over the Esk Valley below. The main house has been altered and is not listed separately.
