William Burn and David Bryce, circa 1844 with later alterations and additions. Single storey, 2-bay Jacobean style lodge with crowstepped gables and large, harled modern addition to rear (SW). Grey ashlar sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. Base course; chamfered surrounds to windows.
NE (ORIGINALLY PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: crowstepped advanced M-gabled bays; architraved doorway with stepped hoodmould over square panel; door replaced by window with boarded panel below; narrow window to right return. Advanced, 3-light canted bay with stone panelled aprons in bay to left of centre.
SE (SIDE) ELEVATION: irregular 2-bay with crowstepped gabled bay to left. Advanced, full-height stack to centre of gable; window set wide in bay to left. Narrow window in bay to right.
NW (SIDE) ELEVATION: Single crowstepped gabled bay with tripartite window to centre.
Replacement 2-pane timber sash and case windows; stone mullions to tripartite and to canted window. Grey slate roof; scrolled brackets to skewputts; tall, cylindrical ashlar corniced stacks to SE and to centre ridge; cast-iron rainwater goods.
GATEPIERS AND QUADRANT RAILINGS: sandstone ashlar panelled, Greek cross-plan gatepiers with string course, panels and pyramidal, corniced cap. Highly decorative quadrant railings with stylised anthemion panels. Further pair of cylindrical ashlar sandstone piers with string course and flat, circular cope, terminating quadrant railings.
A fine lodge as a foretaste to the impressive St Joseph's Hospital beyond (formerly Whitehill House) 1839-1844.
