Description

Mid 19th century. 2-storey asymmetrical, 3-bay, gabled house with screen wall slightly recessed in front of single-storey, 6-bay block, set back to NE. Slightly advanced, corbelled central bay. Snecked and stugged ashlar sandstone with stugged and droved tails to windows; chamfered reveals to openings; long and short quoins; rendered outbuilding to NE.

NW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: main, 3-bay block: slightly advanced, full- height bay to centre: timber panelled door at ground; corbelled at 1st floor with single window; blank, square panel to gablehead above. Window at ground in bay to right; dormer window with gablet roof at 1st floor above. Window at ground in bay to left; window at 1st floor above; blank, square panel in gablehead above. 6 bay block, set back to left: window at ground in bay to left of centre; blank square panel to gablehead above. Window in bay to left; gable above. Window in bay set back to outer left. Wall with rectangular doorway projecting NW at right angles to join screen wall in front of 6-bay block; screen wall at this point topped with twin ball finials. Timber panelled door in bay to right of centre. Window in following two bays. Boarded door in bay to outer right.

SE (REAR) ELEVATION: irregular, 5-bay. 2-storey, 2-bay group to left with single storey 3-bay group to right. 2-leaf, glazed door with rectangular fanlight above at ground in bay to centre; dormer window with gablet roof to attic above. Window at ground in bay to right. Window at ground in bay to outer right with gable and gablehead stack above. Window at ground in bay to left; dormer window at 1st floor above. Window at ground in bay to outer left; window to gablehead at 1st floor above.

SW ELEVATION: symmetrical, 3-bay. Dormer window at 1st floor in bay to centre. 3-light canted and corniced window at ground in bay to right; dormer window at 1st floor above. 3-light canted and corniced window at ground in bay to left; dormer window at 1st floor above.

12- and 8-pane timber sash and case windows; some lying pane windows to wing projecting to NE and attic to rear; grey slate roof; ashlar coped stacks; coped skews; cast-iron rainwater goods with decorative hoppers.

Statement of Interest

Occupied by Archibald Hood, an entrepreneur who began mining at Whitehill Colliery in 1856 and who established the colliery village of Rosewell. He subsequently went on to set up collieries in Wales, running them all concurrently. His son continued the business and lived at Midfield House.
