Description

Earlier 19th century with later alterations and additions. Rectangular- plan 2-storey 3-bay classical house with possibly later single storey with attic addition to rear. Roughly-squared rubble sandstone with droved ashlar dressings to house. Eaves course.

SE ELEVATION: consoled and corniced doorway with panelled door to centre, lattice rectangular fanlight; window at 1st floor above. Window to each floor of flanking bays.

NW ELEVATION: bowed bay to centre, for staircase, with long stair window. Window to each floor of bay to right (non-aligned, smaller at ground). Enlarged window at ground of NW elevation of addition in bay to left; small window to gablehead above; modern boarded door with glazed upper panel in bay to outer right of return SW elevation.

12-pane timber sash and case windows; modern tripartite window with upper hopper to centre light of window at ground of addition. Slate roof with 2-pane flush 19th century rooflight to centre of SE; modern rooflights to addition. Brick wallhead stacks to side elevations; sandstone shouldered and coped wallhead stack to NE elevation of addition. Coped ashlar skews, to addition also.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1996.

OUTBUILDING: single storey sandstone rubble rectangular-plan building to outer right of rear with boarded door in bay to left of NE elevation; former door opening in bay to right, now partly blinded with upper-hopper timber multi-pane window. Piended slate roof.

Statement of Interest

See separate listing for Crunklaw Steading. The group is of great interest not least due to its extant nature. There has been care given to maintain the buildings. It would appear that there have been later alterations to the house, although no documentary evidence of this has been found as yet, 1996.
