Description

Mid 19th century with later alterations. 2 terraced rectangular-plan, 2-storey ranges stepped down hill forming near continuous 21-bay range of 7 farmworkers' cottages with single storey lean-to additions at rear (entered at rear). Predominantly harl-pointed tooled rubble sandstone; some whinstone at ground; lightly droved sandstone dressings; harled side elevation to N; harled rear additions (some painted). Timber bargeboards; tooled rubble quoins; tooled long and short surrounds to front openings; lightly droved margins; projecting cills. Timber bargeboards to gableheaded windows.

E (FRONT) ELEVATION: NOS 1-4: 12-bay. Single windows in all bays at ground; 8 regularly disposed gableheaded windows grouped 2-2-2-2 breaking eaves above. NOS 5-7: 9-bay, slightly lower block comprising single windows in all bays at ground; 6 regularly disposed gableheaded windows grouped 2-2-2 breaking eaves above.

W (REAR) ELEVATION, NOS 1-4: irregularly fenestrated lean-to additions with single doors (predominantly replacement) off-set to right of centre; single windows in flanking bays. NOS 5-7: irregularly fenestrated lean-to additions with part-glazed boarded timber doors at centre (replacement door to No 7); single windows in flanking bays.

Predominantly 6-pane upper, 2-pane lower glazing in timber sash and case windows (some uPVC glazing to front at 1st floor); modern glazing throughout at rear. Grey slate roofs; skylights at rear. Regularly disposed brick built ridge and apex stacks (sandstone bases); circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIORS: not seen 1997.

Statement of Interest

Originally built as farmworkers' cottages for the nearby Whitsome Hill farm. Minor alterations at rear do not marr the merits of these cottages. This long gabled range remains an impressive testimony to the spin-off from the agricultural revolution, particularly from the front. With its paired gableheaded windows, regularly disposed stacks, timber sash and case windows and general uniformity, the majority of original features remain intact.
