Description

Early 20th century. Asymmetrical 2-storey, 4-bay Free Style house with full-height bow at centre; single storey, single bay addition to outer left (internally linked to adjacent No 4 Burnside Place). Harl; red sandstone ashlar dressings. Squared and snecked tooled red sandstone base plinth; overhanging timber bracketed eaves; half timbering beneath gablehead to SW; bolted timber bargeboards. Polished long and short surrounds to openings (part rake-jointed); sandstone mullions; chamfered cills at ground; flush cills at 1st floor.

NW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: central bow comprising 3-light glazing rows at both floors (upper floor stepped out, breaking eaves). Single windows at both floors in bay off-set to left of centre; single window at ground in bay to left; single window in bay to outer left. Steps to part-glazed timber panelled door in bay to outer right; architraved, depressed-arch surround with "The Tinnion Nursing Home" embossed in tympanum.

SW (SIDE) ELEVATION: bipartite window at ground in bay off-set to left of centre; corniced parapet surmounting 3-light canted window in bay off-set to right; 3-light glazing row at 1st floor beneath half-timbered apex. Single storey lean-to projection recessed to outer right.

Predominantly 6-pane upper, plate glass lower timber casement glazing. Red tile bell-cast pitched roof; moulded sandstone copes to harled stacks; circular terracotta cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1997.

BOUNDARY WALL, GATEPIERS AND GATES: sandstone coping to harled wall enclosing site. Circular-plan piers flanking entrance; shallow hemispherical sandstone caps; timber pedestrian entry gate.

Statement of Interest

Adapted for use by Ayrshire & Arran Health Board. An interesting house which, despite change of use and the addition of a single storey clinic to the N in 1923 (No 4 Burnside Place), still retains some good features. These include a prominent bow, overhanging timber bracketed eaves, long and short surrounds to openings and a red tile bell-cast roof.
