Description

Early 20th century with later additions and alterations. Asymmetrical 2-storey, 4-bay villa grouped 3-1 with single storey porch in re entrant angle to right; 2-storey wing recessed to outer right; large single storey, L-plan addition at rear. Squared and snecked stugged red sandstone; polished sandstone dressings. Bull-faced rubble plinth; architraved string course; architraved cill course at 1st floor; corniced eaves. Chamfered surrounds to openings; chamfered cills; sandstone mullions and transoms.

S (FRONT) ELEVATION: main 3 bays comprising single windows centred at ground and 1st floors; 4-light canted windows at both floors in bay to outer left; 3-light bowed windows at both floors in bay to right. Single storey porch adjoining to right; single window at 1st floor in recessed bay above. 3-light canted oriel with parapet breaking eaves in 2-storey wing recessed to outer right; small window at ground.

E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: bracketed, round-arched timber canopy centred in porch to outer left; small-pane surrounding lights. Vestibule entrance recessed within comprising round-arched door surround with raised blocks and keystone, concave reveals; 2 leaf timber panelled door. Tripartite windows at both floors in bay to right; single openings at ground in remaining bays to right; single window at 1st floor. Irregularly fenestrated in 2-storey wing advanced to outer right.

Predominantly 2-pane timber sash and case glazing; small-pane timber casements to porch. Graded grey slate roof; cast-iron rainwater goods. Corniced sandstone apex and wallhead stacks; ridge stack to S; circular cans.

INTERIOR: adapted for use as nursing home.

BOUNDARY WALL, RAILINGS AND PIERS: polished coping to squared and snecked bull-faced rubble wall enclosing site to S; decorative cast-iron railings; taller, bull-faced piers; surmounting lamps; cast-iron gates.

Statement of Interest

An impressive red sandstone villa which, despite change of use and subsequent rear addition, has retained some good details. In particular, note the corbelled oriels, timber windows, corniced stacks and single storey entrance porch.
